Special Tool Catalog
DESCRIPTION OF THE MB SPECIAL TOOL CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM

A specific number of MB Special Tools are necessary for the service, maintenance and repair of MB vehicles. The special tools are arranged according to design/service groups. The tools are subdivided within these design groups into the following separate tool categories: A, B, C and K.

MB Special Tools have a numbering format that look like: xxx 589 xx xx xx . All MB Special Tools reside in the MB part system and can be ordered via the MB Dealer’s Parts Department.

Required (Minimum) Special Tools

A - for service and maintenance work.
B - for diagnostics, repair work and component replacement.

The required (minimum) special tools are designated category A and B, and ensure the proper completion of routine maintenance and repair jobs. These tools must therefore be available in all Mercedes‑Benz workshops, regardless of size, performing such work.

"Required Special Tool Inventory" spreadsheet

Note 1: occasionally tools from category C- and K- will also be classified "Required" by MBUSA.

Note 2: The attached EXCEL spreadsheet above contains the current list of MBUSA Required Special Tools up through and including Model Year 2007.

Optional Special Tools

C - for component repairs.

The optional tools designated category C are recommended in addition to the required (minimum) tools, depending on the type and extent of the unit overhauls. These tools are also to accommodate large scale mechanical repair jobs. Their purchase is advised by MBUSA (but not required) and depends on the types of jobs performed by specific workshops.

Optional Special Tools

K - for bodywork and paintwork jobs (K = "Karosserie")

The optional tools designated K are used for body and collision repairs as well as paint related repairs. These tasks are carried out in specific workshops equipped with bodyshops.
