Tool Document
MB Special Tools have a numbering format that look like: xxx 589 xx xx xx . The information shown on the tool document contains the following information:
- Special Tool Number
- Name or Title
- Service Group (00, 01 03, 05 …91)
- Category (A-, B-, C-, K-)
- Validity or model, engine, etc. application
- Previous tool number or superceded tool number
- Basic purpose of the tool
- If separate or repair parts are available for this tool
The application and use of the any Special Tool shown is subject to the specific repair instruction(s) that are specified in the Repair Microfiche and/or WIS (the Workshop Information System) issued by Mercedes-Benz.
Arrangement
The Special Tool Documents are arranged to two ways.
1) The first arrangement is in ascending numerical order by Special Tool Number. 2) The second arrangement is by Service Group. Within the each Service Group, the Special Tool Numbers are arrangement in ascending numerical order.
Note that certain Special Tool Numbers can be listed in more than one Service Group if they have multiple applications. Further, Service Group 00 contains Special Tools for general use which can be used in several groups, and in some cases, together with other Special Tools for specific models.
Category Designation of the Special Tools
Required (Minimum) Special Tools
A - for service and maintenance work.
B - for diagnostics, repair work and component replacement.
The required (minimum) special tools are designated category A and B, and ensure the proper completion of routine maintenance and repair jobs. These tools must therefore be available in all Mercedes‑Benz workshops, regardless of size, performing such work.
Note: occasionally tools from category C- and K- will also be classified “Required” by MBUSA.
Optional Special Tools
C - for component repairs.
The optional tools designated category C are recommended in addition to the required (minimum) tools, depending on the type and extent of the unit overhauls. These tools are also to accommodate large scale mechanical repair jobs. Their purchase is advised by MBUSA (but not required) and depends on the types of jobs performed by specific workshops.
Optional Special Tools
K - for bodywork and paintwork jobs (K = "Karosserie")
The optional tools designated K are used for body and collision repairs as well as paint related repairs. These tasks are carried out in specific workshops equipped with bodyshops.
Ordering Special Tools
MB Special Tools can be ordered through the Parts Division of Mercedes-Benz dealerships. The Special Tools have a numbering format that look like: xxx 589 xx xx xx . The Special Tool Number will always be preceded by the code letter “W” for tools.
Automatic Special Tool Shipments
All MBUSA Dealerships participate in the automatic shipment of MB Special Tools and will receive periodically, a selected assortment of the new Special Tools. The selection sent and the timing when these are sent is at the discretion of MBUSA and within the scope of the Franchise Agreement.
Special Tool Prices
The price for Special Tools are provided via the parts department (in the same SAP/Paragon system along with spare parts).
Storage and Management of Required Special Tools
The manner in which Special Tools are stored and managed is up to the end user. However, MBUSA strongly recommends one of the systems depicted in the MBUSA Standard Service Equipment Program; Section “O” (O = Organization). This will assist the dealership to monitor and preserve the capital investment made in the Required Special Tools.
